Shoulder Pain
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. That freedom of movement is what allows us to reach, lift, throw, and carry but it also makes the shoulder relatively susceptible to injury, strain, and dysfunction.
Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints and we have plenty of experience managing these issues.
Pain in the shoulder can present in many ways. It may be a sharp catch when lifting the arm, a deep ache at rest, stiffness that limits how far you can reach, or discomfort that interrupts sleep when lying on the affected side. In some cases, what feels like shoulder pain originates elsewhere e.g. from the neck, upper back, or even referred from internal structures, which is why a thorough assessment matters.
Common causes and contributing factors include:
- Rotator cuff strains, tears, or tendinopathy
- Shoulder impingement syndrome
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
- Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injuries
- Bursitis
- Postural dysfunction placing strain on the shoulder complex
- Referred pain from the cervical or thoracic spine
- Overuse from sport or repetitive occupational tasks
The shoulder does not function in isolation. It works in coordination with the neck, upper back, and ribcage, and problems in any of these areas can contribute to or prolong shoulder symptoms. This is why during an assessment, your chiropractor or osteopath will look at the whole picture rather than the shoulder alone.

How We Can Help
At Angel Spine Clinic, shoulder pain is assessed and treated through both chiropractic and osteopathic care. While the two disciplines have distinct roots, they share a great deal of common ground when it comes to shoulder complaints.
Both chiropractors and osteopaths recognise that the shoulder does not function in isolation. Assessment at Angel Spine Clinic considers the shoulder joint itself alongside the neck, upper back, and ribcage, as dysfunction in any of these areas can contribute to or maintain shoulder symptoms.
Treatment may draw on any of the following depending on what is found:
- Manipulation or mobilisation of the shoulder, acromioclavicular joint, cervical and thoracic spine
- Soft tissue techniques including trigger point therapy, cross-friction, and muscle stretching to address tension in the muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder
- Muscle energy techniques to correct imbalances around the shoulder girdle
- Articulation techniques to restore range of motion
- Postural assessment and correction, particularly where rounded shoulders or forward head posture are contributing to the problem
- Exercise rehabilitation to rebuild strength and stability
- Practical advice on load management, movement habits, and self-management
The goal is to understand what is driving your shoulder pain and address it in a way that is appropriate for you.
Your Questions, Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my shoulder pain needs treatment or will resolve on its own?
Minor strains and overuse-related soreness often settle with rest and gentle movement. However, if your pain has persisted for more than a few weeks, is worsening, significantly limits movement, or is affecting sleep, it is worth getting it assessed. Early intervention tends to produce better outcomes.
Can neck problems cause shoulder pain?
Yes, this is very common. The nerves that supply the shoulder and arm originate in the cervical spine, and dysfunction or compression in the neck can refer pain, tingling, or weakness into the shoulder and down the arm. A full assessment will help determine how much of your shoulder pain is coming from the neck.
Is frozen shoulder treatable with chiropractic or osteopathic care?
Frozen shoulder is a notoriously slow-resolving condition, but both chiropractic and osteopathic care can help manage pain, maintain as much range of motion as possible during the inflammatory phase, and support recovery. The approach will depend on the stage of the condition at the time of assessment.
Do I need a scan before coming in?
In most cases, no. A thorough clinical assessment is usually sufficient to guide treatment. If imaging is felt to be necessary, your practitioner will advise you accordingly and can refer where appropriate.

I have been having sessions with Diana and Petros since last year August 2025, their advice guidance and treatment is second to none. When I began at Sel Therapy I was stiff and struggling to move, with my head feeling very very heavy resting on my neck and I was also having an uncomfortable aching pain throughout my arms, which I could not ignore all day. The mobilisation techniques they have used have freed up my neck, shoulders and head and I have felt quite a reduction in the aching in my arms. I am so grateful for Diana and Petros, their attentiveness and care is a different option to taking pain killers every day, which is not recommended or something I would consider. You will not be disappointed if you try this service and you will see improvement instantly, you do have to be prepared to do the stretches and help yourself but they certainly get you onto a great path. When I first visited Diana for a running injury, I honestly thought my running days were over. I was dealing with constant pain that seemed to travel from my hips down both legs and even into my neck. From the very first session, I noticed a huge improvement, and Diana also gave me tailored strength exercises to help rebuild my body properly. Fast forward just 6–7 months, and I’m now running faster and further than before — completely pain-free. I can confidently say I will complete my half marathon without injury, something I never thought would be possible.
